Limited class size

20 hours (split into 3 sessions) of hands-on instruction on sculpting a portrait bust in water base clay - from armature to completion.

Session One - Saturday, September 9th - 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
We begin this class by creating the bone structure of the human skull and facial anatomy. This is a critical to the process of sculpting realistic human figures. If you don’t understand what lies beneath the skin, you'll struggle throughout this class and going forward. The bone structure in vital and the underlying anatomy influences facial movement. Once we have the basic bone structure of the skull, we add the facial features (eyes, nose, mouth and ears) using symmetrical lines, planes and volumes. There will be in-depth discussions on the differences in age, gender and ethnicity as well as the seven basic expressions of the human face.

Session Two - Sunday, September 10th - 9:00 am - 5:00 pm - We add the neck, shoulders and hair to create gesture and movement. Hair, like drapery must have the correct flow. Movement and shadows are important aspects of sculpture. Both can be obtained with hair flow and/or the muscles of the neck.

Session Three - Saturday, September 30th - 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
By now the water-base clay has firmed. We finish the class by hollowing out the sculpture and finalizing the textures and detailing the features.

Clay, Armature and Tools with be provided for class use.
