Enjoy an evening with friends and family as the award winning Take Note Troupe (TNT), with generous community support, stages Shakespeare's “The Taming of the Shrew,” Bollywood style. Get ready for some fabulous Bollywood dance moves! A story this lively is well served by the colorful and bold choices that a setting in India provides. TNT’s interpretation includes the often deleted Induction Scene, which highlights the Bard’s biblical imagery with Petruchio as the long awaited Bridegroom, and Katharina, the converted Bride. This context clarifies meaning and provides understanding to a play that is often reduced to a superficial contest of Man versus Woman. In truth, there is so much more at stake in this play, and this staging hopes to soothe rather than inflame the age old battle of the sexes.

This play was written in and about a time when women had little say in whom they would marry. Thankfully, that is no longer true in most societies. It is TNT’s hope that audiences are able to look beyond this archaic societal convention and focus on why Katharina is known as the “shrew” whom Petruchio seeks to tame. The message appears to be that it has nothing to do with gender, but is instead a revelation of the struggle to tame the shrew within ourselves.
Performances of “The Taming of the Shrew” are free at the parks, although donations are always welcome and appreciated to help keep our program going. Bring a picnic basket, low-backed chairs or blankets and enjoy an evening of fun for the entire family. Be prepared for chilly weather after sunset. There is one ticketed indoor performance at the State Theater in Auburn, with proceeds benefiting the Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center.
