If you can’t draw but wish you could and believe you can’t learn, this course ten week course is for you!
Mondays, September 11 - November 13
The purpose of this course is to develop draftsmen who can use dry media (pencil, charcoal) to make marks on paper that effectively depict a concept, personal object, landscape, still life, or building.
Drawing is a skill that can be taught and learned. With proper instruction and practice, almost anyone can become proficient at “seeing, analyzing, and applying”.
Whether you have taken drawing classes or have no training, this class will benefit you in learning to properly “see” and to draw buildings, landscapes, and still-life drawings.
To effectively represent 3-dimensional objects on a 2-dimensional surface
To effectively depict the illusion of space and volume through linear and/or atmospheric perspective and with the aid of tonal control through separation of values
To learn basic concepts in composition and organizing elements of a drawing
To draft convincing drawings in linear and atmospheric perspective:
1-point, 2-point, and 3-point linear perspective
Repeating objects with spaces in perspective
Inclines (stairs, pitched roofs, and odd angles)
Ellipses (arches and cylinders in perspective)
Scenic views in aerial perspective (Creating the illusion of depth and space)

About the Instructor
As a teenager, Robert studied and earned a degree in fashion design from Los Angeles Trade Technical College. He worked as a pattern designer in the industry during the late 1960s through the mid 70s. He has studied art, design, and photography at five colleges and universities, culminating in a bachelors in fine art (Painting and Studio Practice) from San Jose State University in 1989.
He owned a painting studio in Santa Cruz and a graphic design and photography studio in Sonoma County. His photography and design have won numerous national awards.
He taught drawing and painting privately and in the classroom in Sonoma, Santa Cruz, and Napa counties to adults and youth.
Each class session starts with a PowerPoint-lecture and/or video-demo. Most sessions include structured, in-class exercises with instructor critique. Homework is assigned at the end of each session and is reviewed at the next class. However, between class sessions, the instructor urges students to send him rough ideas, sketches, and any problems they are having, by email. A phone meeting usually helps clear things up. Sometimes a private face-to-face is needed.
