This summer, the Junior Conservationists will head into the high country for a special line-up of treks that are sure to delight the whole family.
For our second outing in the summer series, we’ll head to Sierra Discovery Trail to re-unite with Wildlife Biologist Jessica Abbot. Jessica works for the Institute for Wildlife Studies, a non-profit dedicated to conserving wildlife, habitats, and biodiversity. She is studying how climate change will impact butterfly populations throughout California and Oregon.
Come, take a relaxed stroll around the one-mile loop trail while catching butterflies and learning about local butterflies and Jessica’s research. This is a great activity for kids!
This 0.9-mile paved trail follows the headwaters of the Bear River. From a small waterfall to decaying logs, visitors can learn about the importance of the natural environment and its role in clean water and healthy wildlife. This trek is part of Nevada County Library’s Summer Reading Program.
A conservationist is someone who advocates or acts for the protection and preservation of the environment and wildlife. These outings are designed for children ages 5 to 12, accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Join us the second Saturday of every month as we explore local trails and discover the plants, animals, and history of each special region.
The Sierra Discovery Trail is accessible via a packed gravel path appropriate for people of diverse mobility levels.
